CDレンタル最大手のTSUTAYAなんかでも、オンライン・レンタルショップをやってますよね。ああいうシステムはどう思いますか。

あれはもともと、アメリカのネットフリックスっていうベンチャーのシステムなんですよ。郵送のレンタルで大成功したんですけど、すごく象徴的な話があるんです。むこうは、たとえばハリーポッターみたいに人気タイトルにすごい量の貸し出しが集中すると予想される場合、業者がライセンスを受けてマスターだけ借りて、DVD‐Rにコピーして貸し出したらしいです。そのやり方で、視聴者が待ちなしで借りられるシステムを実現した。ニーズがあるのに貸出中で機会損失があるのは、自分たちにとってもコンテンツホルダーにとってもメリットがないという現実的判断ですね。これが4年ぐらい前の話です。

それはすごい発想ですね。日本では考えられない。

で、そのネットフリックスのCEOが最近、「我々のビジネスはもってあと3年だ」といったんです。これからはみんなオンデマンドで、ハードディスクにオンラインから落として、見たら消す時代になる。アップルなんかはそういうビデオレンタルを始めていて、我々のビジネスは確実にあと3年で息の根が止まると。たぶん、日本でもそういう波がくるでしょう。若い子と話していても、確実にパッケージに対する思い入れは少なくなってます。
